Peer-to-peer disk streaming (FWDSU)

High-speed data recording with minimal CPU/DRAM load

  • Overview

The FWDSU firmware option enables high-speed peer-to-peer (P2P) data streaming to solid-state drive (SSD) storage and is intended for high-speed recording systems. The main advantage of P2P compared to conventional methods is that it significantly reduces the workload on the CPU and DRAM of the host PC. Data is transferred directly from the digitizer to the storage device and therefore avoids unnecessary involvement of the host PC.

FWDSU can stream data to multiple disks simultaneously in order to increase the throughput. It also supports seamless handover between disks to ensure uninterrupted continuous recording of large amounts of data.

The firmware can be used for both PXIe and PCIe systems. In PXIe systems the data is transferred to the storage device via the PCIe switch in the backplane of the chassis. It is compatible with major PXIe chassis brands, but it is important to ensure that the selected model supports transfers between the utilized PXIe slots via the switch with sufficient speed. Please refer to the documentation of the chassis or consult Teledyne SP Devices if you need help. We also offer a stand-alone SSD storage unit in PXIe format, the ADQDSU.

In PCIe systems, the data is typically transferred either via the root complex of the CPU chipset or a switch depending on the architecture of the system. It is important to understand the capabilities and performance of the root complex or switch as well as the selected SSD devices. Please refer to the datasheet for information about different chipsets and SSD models that have been tested together with FWDSU.

We are continuously adding peer-to-peer disk streaming support to different digitizers. Please refer to the latest FWDSU datasheet for currently supported models.
